WHO WE ARE
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce (HFHGB) is a
community-based, non-profit, faith-based organization working for a world where
everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our mission is to mobilize
volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting
homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.
The organization was founded in 1987, is a
member of
Habitat for Humanity Canada,
and part of a worldwide network that spans 100 countries, has built over 300,000
homes, and is now building a new home every 10 minutes.
We believe that access to safe, decent and affordable housing is a basic human right. There is a role with Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce for everyone committed to our vision, mission and values.
What we do
HFHGB partners with families, businesses, organizations and individuals to build simple, affordable and energy efficient homes. These homes are sold at no profit, to selected families through long term, no-interest mortgages. Families must prove a need for housing, an ability to cover mortgage payments and a willingness to contribute hundreds of hours of their own labour, known as “sweat equity”, to the building of their own house or the houses of others.
By working with volunteers and community
partners, Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce has placed 24 families (40 adults and
64 children) in homes throughout Grey and Bruce since the Affiliate was founded
in 1987.
How we keep homes affordable
Habitat builds simple, decent homes with partner families. Volunteers and families donate their labour to build houses under trained supervision. Businesses, individuals, faith groups, and others donate money, materials and other in-kind support. Habitat houses are sold at cost to partner families. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
All of our operating and fund development costs are covered by the proceeds from
our retail operation, The ReStores,
which sells new and gently-used renovation and household materials donated by
the general public.
Our ReStores, with locations in Owen Sound and Hanover, have been significant,
consistent contributors supporting our vision over their 10 year history. The HFHGB ReStores and Build staff
and volunteers combined their “green” philosophy to become a recipient of the
prestigious Rio Tinto Alcan Sustainable Homes award in 2009. We are equally proud that our
ReStores have recently been officially designated as an Ontario Electronic Recycler for the
Grey Bruce counties.
All profits from ReStore sales go towards administrative/staff expenses, current
and future builds and we thank contributors of merchandise – such as kitchen
cabinets, furniture, electronics and construction products – for their
continuous support. Bargain-hunters
will gleam at the wide array of products available. Please call (519) 371 6714
